Tommy Lee’s lawyer wants guards removed pending investigation into fight | News

The lawyer for dancehall artist Tommy Lee Sparta wants corrections officers involved in the artist’s beating to be immediately removed from active duty pending an investigation.

Donahue Martin also wants the Department of Corrections (DCS) to conduct an internal investigation into the incident.

The independent commission of inquiry is already investigating the matter.

Martin also said the artist’s legal team is “looking into all options.”

Tommy Lee Sparta, known as Leroy Russell, was taken to Kingston Public Hospital on Monday with visible injuries to parts of his body.

The injuries were sustained during a fight with correctional officers.

The DCS, in a statement on Monday, said a correctional officer was also injured in the incident.

Without naming Tommy Lee, the DCS, citing a report from the acting superintendent on duty, said the inmate refused to be returned to his cell following the breakfast distribution.

It is alleged that the detainee threw his breakfast at the staff officer in retaliation before being ‘restrained’ by the officer.

Martin said the artist’s legal team expects a thorough and prompt investigation.
