The controversial self-proclaimed general landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 6am on Tuesday, October 20.

The 60-year-old human rights activist was born in 1962 in Magina, Kisumu. He studied at Apondo Primary School before moving on to Njiiri High School in Murang’a County.

He then joined the prestigious University of Nairobi (UoN), where he served as a student leader from 1986 to 1987.

However, as a student leader, he was expelled from the institution for defending democracy during the one-party state under Daniel Moi.

Miguna was called to the Bar of Ontario as a barrister and barrister in February 1995 and as a barrister in Kenya in 2008.

He was the coordinator of the Committee for Democracy in Kenya (CDK) between 1989 and 1994.

The group successfully lobbied for the repeal of Section 2A of the old constitution, making Kenya a multi-party state.

The lawyer-turned-politician worked as a senior adviser and chief strategist for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga from 2006 to 2009.

In 2009, he was promoted by the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to the post of Senior Advisor for Coalition, Constitutional and Legal Affairs.

He held the position until 2011.

“I represented the ODM and Mr. Odinga in the constitutional review process and participated in other important state and government functions,” Miguna noted.

In 2018, the lawyer swore in Raila as the people’s president following the disputed 2017 presidential vote.

KMM law firm

Miguna is the managing partner of the KMM law firm in Toronto, Canada. He has over 25 years of experience in the legal sector.

In June 2021, he expressed his joy after winning a racism case in the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Miguna acted on behalf of a black Canadian who was facing imminent eviction from his landlords, identified as Benjamin Salsberg and Bruce E. Bussin.

The landlord claimed the tenant was ‘unattractive’ and his business did not attract ‘family-oriented customers’.

In the ruling, the judges found the tenant acted in good faith and had an impressive rent payment record.

Miguna’s books as an author

The lawyer has published thousands of journals and several books.
