The organization

Founded in 2018, the Stichting Foundation for International Environmental Law (FILE) is the leading philanthropic initiative fighting climate change by stepping up environmental legal action globally. Driven by the urgent global transition to a zero-carbon society, FILE is funding leading global partners to take pioneering legal and shareholder action in an effort to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees.

In Asia, FILE works closely with the Tara Climate Foundation (Tara) in Singapore. Tara is a regional grantmaking initiative aimed at accelerating energy transformation in South, Southeast and East Asia, excluding India and China. Tara’s mission is to support a diverse group of partners, civil society organizations, businesses, think tanks and donors, to accelerate Asia’s energy transformation. Tara has a team of advisors based in the region with strong local networks.

The role

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced and innovative lawyer to work in South, Southeast and East Asia to help transition the region to a clean energy future with two philanthropic foundations from leading climate action. You will be engaged by Tara and work with the FILE team to support a growing network of climate-focused lawyers in the region, working with expert colleagues from FILE.

You will support FILE’s Asia-Pacific Strategy Manager and the team to develop FILE’s legal strategy in the region and build and strengthen the network of climate-focused lawyers in the region through funding, developing convincing legal strategies and building capacity and knowledge in the region.

Your other missions will be:

  • Build an impactful portfolio of legal beneficiaries to implement the regional strategy and drive change
  • Build and maintain relationships with lawyers and civil society across the region to foster knowledge sharing and maximize impact
  • Identify ways to support the expansion of the Asian climate legal community, including creating opportunities for innovation and learning
  • Provide guidance, expert advice and support to colleagues to deepen their knowledge of legal intervention opportunities

Required Skills

You are a licensed lawyer with advanced legal practice experience, ideally related to energy, human rights, environment or corporate law, and you have a strong desire to address the climate crisis. You are a natural networker with high-level skills in interpersonal, cross-cultural and strategic thinking; if you are not already working in the Asia region to build relationships, you would be comfortable doing so. In addition, you offer:

  • Experience presenting legal issues to various audiences
  • Ability to work well under pressure and with great rigor
  • Motivated, collaborative with a flexible work style; ability to prioritize competing projects
  • Professional English verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to global time zones; willingness to travel (including overseas)
  • Impeccable ethics; experience working in complete confidentiality and in a high security environment
  • Local work and residency rights for your location in Asia are essential; an Asian language is a plus
