Public Lawyer – Harper Macleod LLP

Due to a period of growth, we are recruiting a lawyer to join our public, administrative and constitutional law team. This role will primarily focus on public law, public sector litigation and public inquiry work, supporting senior partner Jennifer Jack.

Your work will offer an interesting, challenging and diverse mix: primarily advising and representing public and private sector clients, including all elements of central and local government, private sector and third sector clients, on a wide range of questions of public and administrative law, on the interpretation of laws, the powers and responsibilities of public authorities and the assessment of the risk of legal challenge; as well as representing clients in legal challenges, including judicial reviews/appeals and at high profile public inquiries, High value and complex contentious cases in the Court of Session and the Sheriff Court.

We are looking for a candidate with at least 2-3 years of PQ experience, with an interest (and preferably previous experience) in working with the public sector and/or in a litigation/litigation/public inquiry environment.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, customer-focused, organized, with excellent interpersonal and technical skills, and detail oriented. They must be able to work confidently in a fast-paced environment and able to handle a difficult workload often with tight deadlines set by courts/inquiries. The successful candidate will join a culture that depends on each team member working effectively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary group, where support and encouragement are integrated.

The team recently achieved a new Chambers ranking for Parliamentary and Public Affairs.

This role sits within the firm’s highly acclaimed Dispute Resolution team, one of the largest litigation teams in the country which regularly handles the highest profile cases in the Scottish courts and major public inquiries. We regularly represent clients in appeals before the Supreme Court. The team and many of our individual practitioners are regularly recognized by Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500.
