Police hand over Swapna Suresh’s lawyer for hurting religious feelings

Kochi/Palakkad: Kerala Police said on Saturday they had registered a non-dischargeable case against a lawyer from Swapna Suresh, charged in a case of smuggling gold through diplomatic channels, for allegedly hurting religious feelings by the through social media.

The attorney was facing the case for his May 25 social media post criticizing the attire of a state-run bus driver. This post humiliated a particular religion, a complaint against the alleged lawyer.

“We have registered a case against a lawyer Krishna Raj. The complaint states that the lawyer falsely claimed that a KSRTC driver was wearing a white robe and insulting a particular religion. We need to verify the identity of the attorney,” a senior district police official told PTI.

The case was filed under various sections including Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code, police said. The section deals with willful and malicious acts, intended to outrage the religious sentiments of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.

A picture of the driver had gone viral and many right-wing social media outlets including that of BJP state chairman K Surendran claimed that the driver was not wearing the uniform but a white robe. which is traditional Muslim attire.

Later, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) clarified that the driver was wearing a sky blue shirt which is the uniform of his staff and that the photo looked like a dress due to the angle the photo was taken from. socket.

Swapna Suresh, who met the media, claimed the case was filed against his lawyer after his “recent revelations in the gold smuggling case” against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family.

“Why didn’t they register a case when the Facebook post appeared? Why are they doing it now? I can’t change lawyers every now and then…” Suresh said.
