Public interest lawyer, Azubuike Ihemeje has challenged a former presidential aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, to come to Nigeria and take advantage of his presence at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the ICPC or the Nigerian Police to respond to the petitions he has written against him.
In his separate petitions dated September 16, he said Omokri received salaries as a senior special assistant when employed as a special assistant.
The petitions read in part, “”That unless the suspect provides evidence of his subsequent elevation to Senior Special Assistant status, we strongly believe that there is clear prima facie evidence of a criminal case of misrepresentation, taking and receiving excessive wages and above employment status and obtaining money by lying against the suspect.
Reacting to the petition via his Facebook page, Omokri accused the lawyer of being sponsored by Peter Obi, the Labor Party presidential candidate.
Without specifying whether he would return to Nigeria, Omokri urged the EFCC to urgently deal with the petition against him.
“Thank you (EFCC) for initiating this investigation into me due to these allegations made against me by a lawyer sponsored by Mr. Peter Obi. I hereby waive any right to privacy and urge you to report your findings public without having recourse to me.
“Thank you again and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Omokri wrote.
In response to Omokri, Ihemeje denied being sponsored by Obi.
He wrote: “This petition was solely inspired by your own personal messages yesterday.
“And all the details and documentary evidence have been provided by yourself.
“Your voluntary appearance will extinguish much more suspicion against you.
“This is a criminal case against you, so your physical presence will be essential.
“Please don’t wait for Interpol to come into action to look for you.
“As the ‘honest man’ that you have always presented yourself as, you should be able to clear your name on this simple question.
“Try to be brave as usual and weather this little storm. Hope you can!”
