Manchester solicitor vacancies continue to rise

Legal vacancies in Manchester continue to rise after a record high in 2021, as the city’s law firms catch up with London and carve out a niche as the UK’s hub for litigation, personal injury and insurance legal services.

According to a report by national legal recruiters JMC Legal and labor market data analysts Vacancysoft, new private practice and in-house jobs for lawyers in Manchester hit a record high of 880 vacancies in 2021, up from 135 % over one year.

Recruitment in 2022, meanwhile, is growing faster than the rest of England and Wales, with Manchester accounting for a record 17% of all legal vacancies in April.

Litigation and Dispute Resolution (LDR) became Manchester’s largest private practice recruitment area in 2022, up 44% from the same period a year earlier. This increased the city’s share of LDR vacancies in England and Wales from 12% in 2021 to 21% by April 2022.

Manchester law firms account for even higher vacancy shares in qualified legal and personal injury insurance positions compared to the rest of England and Wales, at 41% and 35% of all published vacancies, respectively. Jobs for technology (11%) and regulatory (10%) lawyers were the only positions to experience slowdowns.

Jason Connolly, CEO of JMC Legal, said: “Manchester has firmly cemented its position as an important and successful legal hub since the second quarter of 2020. Businesses are benefiting from the abundant talent pool and reduced fees generals to extend their legal functions to Manchester. This increase has intensified the competition for talent, creating more opportunities for lawyers looking for a different direction, and has contributed in part to the wave of dramatic salary increases we have seen in recent months.

“2022 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Manchester and its legal market, with strong work pipelines providing confidence across multiple practice areas. We can expect to see firms capitalizing on strong financial performance and the positive outlook of continuing to invest in and grow their teams, grow their existing lawyers and improve working conditions with better flexibility, better salary and more opportunities.

Manchester’s leading law firm for legal vacancies is Thompsons Solicitors due to a 112% increase in new jobs so far in 2022.

TLT leads the rankings in 2021 with 48 vacancies for lawyers. In 2022 so far, the British law firm has only advertised a handful of vacancies, putting it in ninth place in the Manchester jobs table.
