Lawyer petitions EFCC over alleged discrepancies involving Jonathan’s former assistant | The Guardian Nigeria News

A lawyer, Azubuike Ihemeje, has filed two petitions against Reno Omokri, a former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) regarding alleged discrepancies in his appointment letter and payslip, which he posted on his social media handles.

Ihemeje, in petitions made available to Port Harcourt reporters, yesterday claimed that Omokri’s employment documents showed criminal misrepresentation, taking and receiving wages in excess of his employment status and obtained under false excuses.

A media consultant and political analyst, Oraye Franklyn, had claimed that Omokri was not an aide to Jonathan but a personal employee of the late Oronto Douglas, who was an aide to Jonathan. He challenged Omokri to publish his letter of appointment of President Jonathan, appointing him and, for this purpose, conferring on him the status of Presidential Assistant.

Ihemeje, in the petitions, said Omokri, through his exchange with Oraye, claimed that he obtained and received salaries from federal government coffers as a senior special assistant, contrary to his only leaked appointment letter bearing the special assistant, thus showing a clear case of obtaining excess wages under false pretenses.

The petition reads: “That between August 2011 and May 2015, the above named suspect, who operates on various social media platforms bearing the name; Reno Omokri, by his claims and confessions, worked for the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a Special Assistant to the President.

“That at some point on September 15, 2022, the suspect voluntarily released his Letter of Appointment and Pay Slip as evidence of a duly appointed worker in the Federal Government of Nigeria at the time.

“To our chagrin and disappointment, we observed fundamental discrepancies between the suspect’s appointment status and salary designation, and we observed fundamental discrepancies between the suspect’s appointment status and salary designation with which he got in series.” He called for an investigation into the matter.

“Therefore, sir, we respectfully request that you deploy your best team of forensic investigators to thoroughly investigate this matter to determine the criminal offenses and also to ensure that the suspect and any other persons involved in this apparent criminality be brought to book under our existing criminal case law.
