Jones Day NQ solicitor salaries rise to £140,000

Extra money for trainees too

Jones Day has raised the salaries of its Newly Qualified (NQ) solicitors in London by 27%, from £110,000 to £140,000.

The American firm’s City recruits also received extra money. First-year trainees will now receive £54,000, while £61,000 will be the base rate earned by second-years. The company currently offers around twenty training contracts per year.

The legal cheek Firms Most List 2022 shows that this latest NQ salary increase puts Jones Day on par with other US companies such as White & Case, Dechert and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

Exchange rates have favored NQs at US companies recently, with new qualifiers Akin Gump receiving £179,000 after a new US dollar to sterling conversion rate was set by the company.

But some companies have remained cautious about further pay rises for juniors. Chief among them are Magic Circle duo Allen & Overy (A&O) and Linklaters, who have both kept NQ rates at £107,500 – for now, anyway. A&O explained that “after careful consideration of the market and with increasingly difficult economic conditions”, it would refrain from further increases. Links, meanwhile, says he’s “continuing to review” his stance on compensation.
