Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) lawmakers Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole refused to hold a meeting on Saturday with Senator Douglas Mwonzora of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) during his visit to the maximum prison in Chikurubi where they have been in pre-trial detention for four years. months for allegedly inciting public violence and defeating the course of justice.
Freddy Michael Masarirevu, the lawyer for the two lawmakers, said Mwonzora tried to see them despite instructions from Sikhala and Sithole that he was not welcome.
In a tweet, Masarirevu said, “Hon. SIkhala and Hon. Sithole wants the public to know that the 14e October, they were informed that Senator Douglas Mwonzora intended to visit them. This information came through the prison security team. Both men declined the request and gave officials their reasons, which were released the same day.
“Saturday 15e of October 2022, the same senior prison security officials came to inform them that Senator Mwonzora had come to visit them, despite their express statement denying the request. Hon. Sikhala and Hon. Sithole again refused and opted to stay in their cells while Senator Mwonzora waited outside the door. Some prison officials confirmed today that Senator Mwonzora had not even reached the second gate. There are five doors that must be passed through in order to see the inmates.
Masarievu said it is “very sad and unfortunate that such an experienced and learned person as Senator Mwonzora is misleading the public into believing that he met Hon. Sikhala and Hon. Sidhole in prison. His public statement which he released to members of the press with whom he traveled to Chikurubi Maximum claiming to have met Hon Sikhala and Hon Sithole is therefore incorrect and must be dismissed with utmost contempt.
“Mr. Sithole and Hon. The Sikhala are very angry with some senior officials in Chikurubi for wanting to force a visit on them. Security officials have even suggested that Senator Mwonzora be allowed to go straight to their cells and guarantee confidentiality, a request which was rejected. As much as the gesture is appreciated, the honorable members wonder why Senator Mwonzora invited members of the press to accompany him if the visit was genuine. Second, why would he insist even to visit them when they made it clear that they were not comfortable meeting him?
The two also question why officials allowed Senator Mwonzora to visit them, while a similar request was denied to President (CCC) Nelson Chamisa. Both are now worried and concerned about their well-being and safety.
In a video released by the MDC-T’s information and publicity department, Mwonzora claimed to have met the two along with 14 other CCC activists who were arrested shortly after the death of party supporter Moreblessing Ali. who was allegedly killed and her body cut into pieces. pieces by someone connected to Zanu PF.
Ali’s remains are still in Chitungwiza General Hospital, months after his death. Sikhala represents the family, who have sworn not to put him to sleep until his killers are imprisoned.
