TOP human rights lawyer, Douglas Coltart has been arrested.

According to his attorneys, Coltart faces fraud charges that police have yet to clear.

Coltart was arrested at Harare Magistrates’ Court on Friday afternoon as he walked out of the courthouse.

He had gone to represent his client, Hopewell Chin’ono, a government spokesman accused of frustrating the course of justice.

This relates to a social media post by Chin’ono regarding the arrest of Zimbabwe Miners’ Federation President Henrietta Rushwaya on allegations of gold smuggling.

Coltart’s attorney, Chris Mhike, confirmed the arrest.

“Yes, he was arrested and is charged with fraud,” he said.

“It is not yet clear where and how the charges against him (Coltart) arose and we expect to have more specific details tomorrow.”

Coltart spent the whole day at Harare Central Police Station but was released into the custody of his lawyers pending his court appearance on Saturday.

Mhike said the police who informed him of ZRP’s interest in interviewing Coltart mentioned “something about extortion”.

Mhike represents Coltart along with Beatrice Mtetwa and David Drury.
