CMS and Simmons raise salaries for NQ lawyers

£ 95,000 and £ 100,000

CMS and Simmons & Simmons have joined a series of City law firms to raise the salaries of their Newly Qualified (NQ) lawyers in London.

Play legal can reveal that CMS has increased base salary from £ 82,000 to £ 95,000, which equates to an additional £ 13,000 or 16%.

the Play legal Firms Most List 2022 shows that NQs are now at the same level of liquidity as their counterparts at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, Mayer Brown and Norton Rose Fulbright.

The hike comes around six months after the company lowered London NQ rates from £ 75,000 to £ 82,000.

Salaries in the firm’s regional offices are also on the rise. Base rates in Bristol are now £ 61,000 (previously £ 50,500), while Manchester and Sheffield wages have increased to £ 51,750 (previously £ 42,500). Glasgow and Edinburgh QNs will now also earn £ 51,750 (previously £ 41,500). This represents increases of 21%, 22% and 25% for these offices, respectively.

Simmons, meanwhile, announced his own salary increases. NQs in London will earn a base rate of £ 100,000, up 14% from £ 88,000.

The change puts Simmons in the £ 100,000 NQ salary club along with Macfarlanes, Hogan Lovells and Freshfields.

Simmons also raised the NQ salary in the Bristol office to £ 68,000. Previously £ 56,000 this is an additional £ 12,000 or 22%. The new salaries are effective as of January 1, 2022.
